The Lyceum Theatre is the Department of Theatre's second proscenium theatre performance space for main stage and applied project productions. The original structure was built in 1917 and served as the school's central heating plant for two decades. In 1939 the Works Project Administration converted the boiler room into a small reception area with a stage and hardwood floors. The building was used for dinners, faculty receptions and fraternity and sorority dances. In 1951 an addition was put onto Matthews Library. When remodeling of the Mathews Library was completed in 1951, the president's and vice president's offices and the placement services occupied the lounge area of the Lyceum. In 1964 the building became the Lyceum Theatre. The Lyceum Theatre is located on the north side of the ASU campus, 100 yards south of University and Forest Avenues.
