Andrew Conti

About the artist: Biography: Born 13 February 1931 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Shortly after High School he served four years in the US Navy as an Electronic Technician aboard the heavy cruiser USS Toledo, at that time assigned to the Korean Theatre of Operations.

Upon his discharge he began his college studies at Youngstown State University where he obtained his B.S. degree, followed by an M.S. from the University of Pittsburgh, and later by a M.Phil. from Columbia University, all in Mathematics.

With no formal training in art he began sculpting in 1967 uder the tutelage of Harvey Fite while they were colleagues on the faculty of Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.

Sculpting was avocated to an avocation for a number of years while his energies were concentrated on teaching Mathematics at both the secondary and college levels. When he retired from full-time teaching in the mid-eighties he was able to devote his full attention to resuming his sculpting efforts, during which time his works were being displayed in the six galleries of Center Art Gallery in Hawaii, along with work of Andthony Quinn, Red Buttons and Tony Curtis. In the fall of 1991 the Conti family moved from the New York City area (Ossining) to Scottsdale, Arizona.

In 2003 he was invited to participate in the Biennale Internazionale dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy held in December, along with some 800 artists from 74 countries.

His current work continues to emphasize figurative stylization in both bronze and polished stainless steel.
