Pioneer and Military Memorial Park
Pioneer and Military Memorial Park is the final resting-place of some of Arizona's pioneers and forefathers. Visitors can wander this thought-provoking site and visit the graves of historical figures such as Jacob Walz, the famed Dutchman of Superstition Mountains and 1881's first Phoenix Mayor, John T. Alsap. The operators have placed great effort in compiling comprehensive research available to visitors, including a book that lists those buried on the grounds between the years 1884 and 1914. The recently relocated historic Smurthaite House, having undergone major restoration, celebrated its grand reopening in 1999 and serves as a visitor's center, archival storehouse, and headquarters for the Pioneers' Cemetery Association.
