THEATRE

American Pastorela: Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About Ethnic Studies But Were Afraid to Ask
December 9-December 18, 2011
Sure, the title sounds pedantic and the word pedantic sound pretentious, but this show, written by James E. Garcia, directed by Alex Vega Sanchez, and produced by New Carpa Theater Company, is funny .
The Show: The evil duo, Horny and Hoopy (current AZ Attorney General Tom Horne and School Superintendent) John Huppenthal, set out to destroy the ethnic studies program in Tucson, hoping it will catapult them governor's office. In exchange for the Tea Party vote, they sell their souls to Satan. Meanwhile, back at the rancho grande, the Hernandez family (accompanied by the ghost of Che Guevara)and Emiliano Zapata) is making its annual Christmas trek from Sonora to Phoenix to catch the light rail to Bethlehem. They all cross paths on the day the State Supreme Court is ruling on whether to ban ethnic studies in Arizona. Comedy ensues.
