Parlor Games: Works By Corinne Geertsen
November 4-November 30, 2011
When you look at the images created by Corinne Geertsen, you are transported to a world that at first seems Victorian and formal. But closer inspection of her newest show, Parlor Games, at After Hours Gallery, leads to a very different worldview.
Science is blended with fantasy. Animals and humans, either living or extinct, mingle. There's a sort of Jules Verne feel about this world Corinne creates, but with a bit of a dark, psychotic side. The darker, hidden dreams are always there, edging in from the corners.
Though Geertsen's art would not be possible without sophisticated rendering software, every piece is produced using archival inks and papers, and in the case of the pieces in Parlor Games, displayed in an eclectic mix of vintage frames.
