Adults' Night Out - How to Make Lasers and Telescopes Give the Best Views of the Sky
November 4, 2011
The MMT Observatory in the Santa Rita mountains south of Tucson is leading the way in new technologies that let telescopes see the heavens more clearly than ever before. Astronomers there are using a pentagram of green lasers shone into the sky to measure air turbulence that makes stars twinkle and spoils the view for large telescopes. Dr. Hart will describe how the lasers help restore sharp images, share some of the scientific insights that the new tools have enabled, and show where we are going with new telescopes of the future.
GUEST: Michael Hart, Astronomer, Steward Observatory, University of Arizona
