Welcome to Shape Shifter: Paintings and Patterns by Jason Smith, the newest show at After Hours Gallery.



Smith's official arts education is from the Herberger College of Fine Arts. But the artist has been drawing and painting since childhood. What's fun about all his work is that he's connected to his childhood world.



In his graphic compositions, a 1950s and 1960s sense of composition pervades, with shapes creating patterns, and color palettes that remind you of the coolest Formica tables and oh-so-hip bachelor pads. The pieces are almost decorative, and are accessible and uplifting.



But right next to these, Jason's paintings of odd-shaped animals, portraits, political commentaries complete with severed heads (in a good way), wacky backgrounds and a generous splash of Pepto-Bismol pink, transport you to what Jason calls his "anomalous personal world."



It's the juxtaposition of these two sides of the artist that makes the show so interesting. Is he dark and twisted, or creating something lovely for the kitchen? The answer is both. Though personally, we think something dark and twisted for the kitchen is a great idea.



Shape Shifter: Paintings and Patterns by Jason Smith open on First Friday, September 2, with an artist reception from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.
