Bent Objects: The Photographs of Terry Border
June 3-July 29, 2011
It's not often you see a perfectly ordinary peanut devour the contents of its brethren. But thanks to the mind of Terry Border, there it is - and all it took to bring the horror to life was the addition of the tiniest amount of wire and a pen.
This is just a taste what you'll encounter at After Hours Gallery's latest exhibition: Bent Objects: The Photographs of Terry Border.
For years, Border has taken benign, everyday objects, transformed them with little hands and feet (or other additions) and photographed them in settings that reflect our own daily lives. The images that result are often hysterical, yet strangely connect us to lost emotions, fears and sometimes even our own ridiculous politics.
An image of two battling spray paint cans (one red, one blue, of course) is just one example. The spray from each can has completely colored its opponent, so hiding each can's original contents that it becomes nearly impossible to know which can stands for which color.
Equally insightful (and laugh-out-loud funny) are the images that put everything from Cupcakes and Cheetos into romantic situations. The photographs so perfectly capture our own insecurities that it's easy to forget they were created with junk food, wire and a mind that won't let ordinary objects sit still.
These photos, as fun as they are, are more than just one-line jokes. The subtext of social commentary, political mores (or lack thereof) and the exploration of our routines and expectations makes the collection worth savoring.
Additional Information: Thousands of people follow the work of photographer Terry Border on his popular blog, http://www.bentobjects.blogspot.com/ and through his books. The artist is now scheduled to make a personal appearance at After Hours Gallery on July 1st,?First Friday, from 6:00pm-9:00pm.
