Bio Buzz Family Series - Drug Addiction: Good Things Gone Bad in the Brain
January 15, 2011
The development of drug addiction is a process that typically begins with initial experiences in social settings during adolescence or young adulthood. For some individuals, drug use escalates and becomes a habit that is extremely difficult to control. Loss of control over drug taking becomes evident as repeated episodes of relapse when one attempts to quit taking the drug. My research uses animal models to examine the biological basis for the development of drug addiction. I will discuss biological risk factors for initiating drug use as well as changes that take place in the brains of animals that chronically engage in taking cocaine and how these changes are thought to contribute to drug addiction and subsequent relapse.
