Adults' Night Out: Deception and Misperception On and Off the Magic Stage
June 4, 2010
Now you see it, and now you don't. Or do you? Stephen Macknik, Ph.D., will discuss how magic and illusions relate to misperceptions not just on stage where there is a willing suspension of disbelief, but also in crime, fraud, the legal system and the paranormal. Dr. Macknik is a laboratory director at the Barrow Neurological Institute, where he studies various aspects of visual, sensory, and cognitive neuroscience. Look for Dr. Macknik's new book Sleights of Mind, co-authored by Susana Martinez-Conde and Sandra Blakeslee, on the topic of neuromagic due out in the fall of 2010. Explore the Center's exhibit galleries from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. This is free for everyone. Please leave children at home. Additional evening options include IMAX presentation, Under the Sea 3D. A lecture presentation at 7:00pm is free; and an IMAX film or planetarium presentation at 8:15pm. (Regular admission fees apply for film and planetarium presentations.) Additional fees apply for entrance to featured exhibitions.
